My name is James Bumanglag and this is my blog about martial arts, focusing mainly on Mixed Martial Arts in the UFC, my MMA training, and other random martial arts thoughts. Currently I am not training due to scheduling issues in college, but I hope to start again soon. I hope to someday get a black belt in brazilian jiujitsu, and perhaps also finish my hapkido training. I would also like to learn some weapon based arts in the future such as Escrima, and I am also interested in taking Parkour. My favorite fighter is BJ Penn.
Leg ride take down
From behind, get two on one wrist grab. Wrap leg inside opponent like hooking for an RNC, and take down.
Double Leg
Slide head to near shoulders
Keep Leg posted out
Use your head as a third appenage in the push pull tactic
High Single Leg
Treat it like a deadlift
Lift with legs, not back
Good against big guys
Good if guy is leaning against the cage
Practice pummeling and duck unders
Hips and core work very important, where submissions and take downs come from

I have not seen this fight yet either, but I am glad that Wand still got it. He is a killer and one of my favorite fighters ever. I like Cung Le as well, and I hope to see him very successful in the UFC. I think that he came into the fight with too long of a layoff and must have been rusty. Excited to see him fight in this division, a lot of exciting matchups for him.
Dana White made an interesting statement that Shogun vs. Henderson would’ve set UFC back a bit if they decided to show it on FOX. I have not seen the fight yet, but I have heard its one of the most extreme fights in recent history, and possibly of all time. If so, I completely agree that it’s good it was not on FOX. MMA is still considered fringe, and a lot of people I know still simply don’t understand the sport. Mainstream media would have had a field day with the violence portrayed in the Shogun/Henderson fight. A quick knockout from 2 HWs is better for their first FOX showing. A couple more events and the public will be more accustomed to MMA.
One of my favorite pictures, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes riding a motorcycle. BJ Penn talks a lot of smack but it’s all just for show, he always extends a training offer and an olive branch to all his opponents, win or lose. Really funny to see these two together after the three battles they have had.
Junior Dos Santos defeated Cain Velazquez last week in a quick TKO. I have always been a fan of Dos Santos, in fact I saw one of his earliest fights in person. At UFC 90, he fought Fabricio Werdum and knocked him out within just a couple seconds. I’ll never forget that fight, I was sitting in pretty much the farthest seats available, but the punch that connected was still heard. It was the best knockout I’ve ever seen in person and one of my favorite fights overall. The main event was not great, it was the beginning of Anderson Silva’s “dance around and disrespect” routine that lasted a couple of fights. I was a big Silva fan until that night, and now not so much anymore, though I still think he is one of the best in the world.
Every time I watch Kill Bill I get the urge to take kendo lessons and get a nice high quality japanese sword. But then I think that it’s not practical at all, and I’ll never put those skills to use. I guess the sparring would be fun, but I don’t think I would want to deal with the sparring if I had to do katas etc.
I think kendo would be good in self defense situations if you had a long stick or maybe a bat. Or if your opponent had a weapon you could probably disarm them pretty easily. But as far as weapon based fighting goes, I think I would rather train Kali/Escrima, or even get trained in tactical firearm techniques. More in future blog posts
For the longest time I trained nogi because I thought the gi was outdated for mma, but then i rolled with some strictly gi players and I was blown away by how technical and accurate their techniques were. Since then I have trained in the gi. Plus the added motivation of getting ranked is cool too!
Really want to get back into bjj. Don’t have the time or the money right now, but hopefully before next summer I’ll be back to training full time. Such an awesome sport that clears your mind and gets you more energized than 100 cups of coffee
BJ Penn to fight Nick Diaz, can’t wait for this fight..although its curious how these two guys train together but now have to fight. But this happens, its not a team sport..
